The listing became official on August 11, 2025. Located in Theresa, Widmer’s Cheese Cellars has remained in continuous operation by the same family for generations, making it one of the oldest family-run cheese factories in the United States.

Founded in the early 20th century, Widmer’s is best known for its traditional brick cheese and adherence to historic cheesemaking methods. Many of the original processes, equipment, and production techniques are still in use today, offering a rare glimpse into Wisconsin’s early industrial dairy practices.

The National Register listing recognizes properties that are significant in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering, or culture. According to the Wisconsin Historical Society, Widmer’s Cheese Cellars qualified due to its role in shaping the state’s cheese industry and its exceptional state of preservation.

Owners and operators of the cheese factory expressed pride in the designation, noting that the recognition honors both their family legacy and the broader history of Wisconsin agriculture. The listing does not change how the business operates but does help preserve the site’s historical significance for future generations.

Wisconsin officials say the designation highlights the importance of local businesses in telling the story of the state’s identity, reinforcing Wisconsin’s reputation as America’s Dairyland.
