Student-Led Initiative Promotes Sportsmanship at Horicon High School

Launched during the 2022–2023 school year, the Marshmanship Project was formed by five Horicon High School students with guidance from staff advisor Amy Rodriguez. The initiative was created to promote good sportsmanship among students, athletes, and fans, emphasizing accountability and respect both on and off the field.

According to Michael LeBouton, the project focuses on setting a visible example during school events. Members attend athletic competitions and school activities, modeling positive behavior and encouraging peers to support teams in a respectful manner. The group also works to remind students that sportsmanship extends beyond winning and losing—it reflects the values of the entire school community.

Since its inception, the Marshmanship Project has grown in visibility and influence. Students involved say the initiative has helped shift the atmosphere at games, creating a more welcoming environment for athletes, officials, and spectators alike. School administrators have praised the group for taking ownership of school culture and leading by example.

Faculty leaders note that the program also helps students develop leadership and communication skills, while reinforcing the importance of integrity and mutual respect. Plans are in place to continue the project in future school years, with new students joining to carry on its mission.

As Horicon High School continues to support student-led initiatives, the Marshmanship Project stands out as a reminder that positive change often begins with students themselves.
