The event invites residents to bring in their most unsettling vintage dolls to be displayed throughout the library in celebration of Halloween. From cracked porcelain faces to wide, glassy eyes, the dolls have transformed normally quiet corners of the library into a playful yet spine-chilling exhibit.
Library staff said the idea was sparked by a desire to offer a lighthearted, seasonal program that encourages community participation while embracing a bit of harmless Halloween fun. Visitors are encouraged to tour the displays and vote for the doll they find most unnerving.
“We wanted something interactive that would bring people into the library and give them a reason to smile—or shiver,” staff members said.
The Face-Off has quickly become a conversation starter among patrons of all ages. While some visitors admit the dolls give them the creeps, others enjoy the nostalgia and craftsmanship behind the vintage figures. Clear signage and thoughtful placement ensure the displays remain fun rather than frightening for younger visitors.
The Spooky Doll Face-Off is part of the library’s broader effort to host creative, seasonal programming that connects the Mayville community with its public spaces. Library officials said they hope the event becomes an annual tradition.
Voting is open through Halloween, after which the winning doll will earn bragging rights—and perhaps a reputation as Mayville’s creepiest collectible.
