Volunteers with the church are weaving durable sleeping mats made entirely from recycled plastic bags. The lightweight mats provide a protective barrier between individuals and hard or damp ground, making them especially useful for people experiencing homelessness, those affected by disasters, or individuals in temporary outdoor situations.

Church organizers explained that the project serves a dual purpose: offering practical assistance to those in need while also reducing plastic waste. The bags are cut into strips, looped together to form “plarn” (plastic yarn), and then woven or crocheted into sturdy mats that are water-resistant and easy to transport.

“These mats are simple, but they can make a meaningful difference,” volunteers said. “They offer comfort, insulation, and dignity to people who may be facing very difficult circumstances.”

The project has brought together church members of all ages, fostering fellowship and a shared sense of purpose. Donations of clean plastic shopping bags from the community help keep the effort going, and completed mats are distributed through outreach partners and relief efforts.

Located in the City of Mayville, Mayville United Methodist Church said the Weaving Comfort mission reflects its commitment to service, compassion, and creative problem-solving in response to real-world needs.

Community members interested in donating bags, learning how to help weave mats, or supporting the project in other ways are encouraged to contact the church for more information.
