During a meeting on Wednesday, April 23, Director of Public Works Nick Roskopf updated the Village of Lomira Streets Committee on rising radium levels detected in Well 2. Roskopf told committee members that testing data has shown a gradual increase over time, prompting concern and the need for further evaluation.
Radium is a naturally occurring element that can be found in groundwater, and federal and state regulations limit the amount allowed in public drinking water systems. While Lomira’s water remains in compliance, officials said proactive investigation is important to avoid future issues and ensure long-term safety.
The Streets Committee discussed the possibility of conducting a radium reduction investigation, which would involve studying treatment options, costs, and potential system upgrades. Such an investigation could help the village determine whether blending water sources, installing treatment equipment, or pursuing alternative solutions would be most effective.
Committee members emphasized that the discussion was informational and exploratory, with no immediate decisions made. Any significant changes or investments would require further study and approval by the Village Board.
Village leaders said keeping residents informed about water quality remains a priority. Updates will be shared as additional testing results are reviewed and as the investigation process moves forward.
