MAYVILLE, Wis. — A summer spent working inside a local newsroom has given college student Natalia Shirasaki-Krahn a closer look at journalism and the many responsibilities that come with reporting community news.

Young Journalism Intern Wraps Up Summer Experience at Local Newspapers

Shirasaki-Krahn spent the summer interning with the Dodge County Pionier, Campbellsport News and Kewaskum Statesman. Her internship began in June and continued through the end of August, providing her with hands-on experience covering stories and learning more about the newspaper business.

She is entering her second year at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. Before beginning college, Shirasaki-Krahn had considered pursuing law. During her first year at Northwestern, however, she discovered an interest in journalism and began considering broadcast journalism as a possible career path.

Her internship allowed her to experience several aspects of community journalism, including attending school board meetings and working on stories involving local communities. Because she grew up in Mayville and attended school in the area, she already had familiarity with many of the communities covered by the newspapers.

Shirasaki-Krahn described the internship as an opportunity to combine her interest in journalism with a chance to give back to the area where she grew up.

Her experience over the summer may help shape her academic and professional plans as she continues college.
