Christopher Nolan, the visionary filmmaker behind Inception, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer, has unveiled details of his most ambitious project to date: a sweeping historical epic titled "Meridian" that follows a single family across three centuries of world-changing events, from the French Revolution to the present day.
The film, which carries a production budget of $250 million — making it one of the most expensive non-franchise films ever made — has been in development for over four years. Nolan wrote the screenplay himself, drawing on extensive historical research and consultations with leading historians from universities around the world.
"I've always been fascinated by how the currents of history flow through individual lives," Nolan said in a rare extended interview. "Meridian tells the story of how one family's choices — their courage, their failures, their loves — intersect with the great turning points of modern civilization."
The cast is equally ambitious, featuring an ensemble of A-list talent spanning multiple generations. Cate Blanchett and Daniel Craig lead the historical segments, while Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet anchor the contemporary storyline. The film also features performances by Javier Bardem, Saoirse Ronan, and Oscar Isaac in supporting roles that span multiple time periods through the use of practical aging effects and minimal CGI.
True to Nolan's signature style, the film was shot entirely on large-format IMAX film, with location filming spanning 14 countries over 18 months. Key locations include the Palace of Versailles, the battlefields of Verdun, colonial India, 1960s Berlin, and modern-day New York. The production employed over 10,000 extras for its largest sequences, including a stunning recreation of the storming of the Bastille.
Composer Hans Zimmer, Nolan's frequent collaborator, has created an original score that incorporates period-appropriate musical styles from each era while maintaining thematic continuity through recurring motifs that evolve across the centuries.
Universal Pictures, which is distributing the film, has committed to an exclusive 90-day theatrical window before any streaming or home video release. The studio is positioning Meridian as a major awards contender and plans to release it in November, traditionally the heart of awards season.
Early reactions from select industry screenings have been overwhelmingly positive, with several attendees describing the film as Nolan's masterpiece. Film critic David Ehrlich, who attended a private preview, called it "a staggering achievement in storytelling that makes you feel the weight of history in your bones." The film's runtime is reported to be approximately three hours and twenty minutes, which has prompted some theater chains to schedule fewer daily screenings but charge premium ticket prices for the IMAX experience.
