Lomira Officials Reevaluate Sexual Offender Residency Ordinance

The issue was brought forward after Police Sergeant Counard raised concerns regarding the village’s existing sexual offender residency restrictions, findings, and intent language. According to officials, the ordinance may expose the village to legal challenges based on how the restrictions are written and enforced.

As a result, the matter was referred to the Village of Lomira Rules Committee, which has begun reviewing the ordinance to determine whether revisions are necessary. Committee members discussed the balance between protecting public safety and ensuring local laws comply with state and federal legal standards.

Officials emphasized that the review does not signal a reduction in concern for community safety. Instead, they said the goal is to ensure that any regulations in place are legally sound, enforceable, and aligned with current case law and best practices.

Village leaders noted that similar residency restrictions in other municipalities have faced legal scrutiny in recent years, prompting Lomira officials to be proactive rather than reactive. Further discussion and possible recommendations are expected to return to the Village Board once the Rules Committee completes its review.
