Village officials in Lomira are taking steps to improve pedestrian safety and clarify responsibilities with the creation of a formal sidewalk maintenance and safety program.

Lomira Officials Develop New Sidewalk Maintenance and Safety Program

The Village of Lomira Streets Committee met on Wednesday, Nov. 5, to draft the program, which is guided by Chapter 20, Article II, Section 20-46 of the Lomira Municipal Code. The effort aims to establish clearer standards for sidewalk conditions, inspections, and repairs throughout the village.

Committee members discussed how uneven surfaces, cracks, and other hazards can pose safety concerns for pedestrians, particularly children, seniors, and individuals with mobility challenges. The proposed program outlines procedures for identifying sidewalk issues, notifying property owners, and setting reasonable timelines for repairs.

Officials noted that the program is intended to be proactive rather than punitive. By clearly defining expectations and processes, village leaders hope to reduce hazards, limit liability, and maintain safe walkways across residential and commercial areas.

Under the draft framework, the village would conduct regular sidewalk inspections and work with property owners to address needed repairs. In some cases, cost-sharing or village-assisted repairs may be considered, depending on the situation and scope of work.

Committee members emphasized that the program is still in the development stage and will require further review. Any final policy would need approval from the Lomira Village Board before being implemented.

Village officials said public input will be an important part of the process, and residents will be kept informed as the proposal moves forward. Additional discussion is expected at upcoming committee and board meetings.
