Officials announced the fundraising effort during an event Sept. 10, outlining plans for a new education center at the Kewaskum memorial.
The project is intended to create a dedicated indoor space where students, veterans, community members and other visitors can learn about the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and the people whose lives were affected by the events.
The Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial in Kewaskum has become a place where visitors can reflect on the attacks and learn about their impact. The organization also works to preserve the stories and lessons associated with Sept. 11 for future generations.
Organizers said the proposed education center would provide additional opportunities for educational programming and allow the memorial to accommodate visitors throughout the year.
The capital campaign represents a significant step in the organization's long-term plans. Fundraising will be necessary to turn the proposed project into a completed facility.
The education center is expected to provide space for exhibits, educational activities and programs designed to help visitors better understand the historical significance of Sept. 11.
Organizers emphasized the importance of ensuring that younger generations have opportunities to learn about the attacks from educational resources and firsthand stories while those memories remain accessible.
The memorial's mission extends beyond remembering the events of 2001. The organization also seeks to recognize the firefighters, police officers, military personnel, emergency workers and civilians whose lives were changed by the attacks and their aftermath.
The new campaign will allow supporters throughout Wisconsin and beyond to participate in the next phase of the Kewaskum memorial's development.
Additional information about the campaign and future construction plans is expected as fundraising efforts continue.
