A growing movement of families is abandoning traditional lifestyles to travel the world full-time, homeschooling their children across continents while working remotely.

The Rise of Digital Nomad Families: How Parents Are Raising Kids While Traveling the World

When Sarah and Marcus Chen sold their suburban home, packed their belongings into storage, and boarded a one-way flight to Lisbon with their three children aged 7, 10, and 13, their extended family thought they had lost their minds. Eighteen months later, the family has lived in twelve countries across four continents, the children are thriving academically and socially, and the Chens have no plans to return to conventional life anytime soon.

The Chens are part of a rapidly growing movement of digital nomad families — parents who combine remote work with worldwide travel, homeschooling their children in what practitioners call "worldschooling." According to recent surveys, the number of families identifying as full-time digital nomads has tripled since the pandemic, now estimated at over 200,000 families worldwide.

"Our children have learned more in 18 months of travel than they would have in years of traditional schooling," says Sarah, a freelance graphic designer. "When we studied ancient Rome, we were standing in the Colosseum. When we learned about marine biology, we were snorkeling on the Great Barrier Reef. When we discussed different cultures, we had real relationships with people from those cultures."

The logistical challenges of raising children on the road are significant but manageable with planning. Most digital nomad families maintain a structured homeschool curriculum supplemented by experiential learning. Online learning platforms have made it possible to access high-quality educational materials from anywhere with internet access, and many families join co-learning communities where traveling parents share teaching responsibilities.

Healthcare is another major consideration. Families typically carry international health insurance policies that provide coverage in most countries, supplemented by telemedicine services for routine consultations. Dental care, vaccinations, and non-emergency procedures are often obtained in countries with high-quality, affordable healthcare systems.

The financial model varies widely. Some families, like the Chens, maintain their previous careers through remote work. Others have built location-independent businesses, from e-commerce to online coaching. Surprisingly, many families find that their overall cost of living decreases while traveling, particularly when spending time in Southeast Asia, Central America, or Eastern Europe, where excellent quality of life is available at a fraction of Western costs.

Social development is perhaps the most common concern raised by critics of the lifestyle. However, research from the University of British Columbia suggests that children who travel extensively develop stronger cross-cultural competence, greater adaptability, and more sophisticated social skills than their peers in traditional settings. Digital nomad children also form deep friendships with other traveling children they encounter repeatedly at popular family hubs around the world.

The lifestyle is not without its drawbacks. Some parents report challenges with maintaining stable routines, managing the emotional toll of constant transitions, and dealing with periods of loneliness or cultural fatigue. Older teenagers may resist the lifestyle if it separates them from established friend groups, and some academic subjects — particularly laboratory sciences and team sports — are difficult to replicate outside traditional school settings. Despite these challenges, the movement continues to grow as more parents question the assumption that a traditional lifestyle centered on a single location is the best way to raise well-rounded, resilient children prepared for an increasingly interconnected and rapidly changing world.
